A nuclear reactor core is the central heart of a nuclear power plant where nuclear fission—the splitting of atoms—occurs to generate immense heat. It houses uranium fuel assemblies, control rods, and a coolant/moderator, all working together to sustain and safely regulate a continuous chain reaction.Key ComponentsThe core's complex environment relies on four primary elements to function:Fuel: The reactor's energy source consists of low-enriched uranium processed into small ceramic pellets. These pellets are stacked into sealed metal tubes (fuel rods), which are bundled into fuel assemblies to form the bulk of the core.Control Rods: Made of neutron-absorbing materials like boron or cadmium, these rods are inserted or withdrawn from the core to regulate the rate of the nuclear reaction or shut it down entirely.Coolant: A fluid—usually ordinary light water—that circulates through the core to absorb the intense heat generated by fission. This heat is then transferred to separate systems to produce steam and drive electricity-generating turbines.Moderator: Often the same water that serves as the coolant, the moderator slows down the high-speed neutrons released during fission, allowing them to be efficiently absorbed by other uranium atoms to maintain the chain reaction.
