Tem2 is probably the most common Eastern switcher locomotive. Thousands of machines are still in use despite rebuilding and replacing programs being active. This is also a machine just about all startup operators in East can afford.
For Tem2 Soviet medium switchers, two distinctive body types exist, the latter is above, all previous machines being built with the rounder shape you find in some of the pictures on the left.
Tem2 was and still is synonymous for switching the huge trains Soviet period road diesels bring to arrivals yards and forming trains in these. With almost 10000 units built since 1960 you can easily spot several subtypes and later rebuilds and modifications once you start looking. And of course you can recognize the Alco RSD copy origins of the loco. Tem2 was copied from the units U.S. donated to Soviet Union in effort to stop it from collapsing during the WW2. With U.S. origins the locomotives have proved to be unusually sturdy and second and third hand markets for easy entering to Estonian rail business have emerged.
