About Japanese "Kamon"(Family Crests)
The origin of Japanese family crests can be traced back to the emperors and nobles of ancient times who used them as ornaments and flags. However, the use of family crests as we know them today became widespread during the era of the samurai class from the Heian period to the Kamakura period (794 AD to 1333 AD). The samurai began to use armor, flags, or family crests to express their social status and affiliations. Later on, during the Warring States period to the Edo period (1603 AD to 1868 AD), family crests spread and diversified among upper-class non-samurai, merchants, artisans, and others.

Today, family crests are treated as a part of traditional Japanese culture, and many households and companies have their own family crests as their identity. It is said that there are more than 20,000 types of family crests created based on Japanese history, culture, traditional occupations, regional customs, or family origins.

Many Japanese family crests have simple and geometric designs.
