The Stadium was built in 1964, designed by the firm now referred to as Spillis Candela DMJM, Hilario Candela principal designer. Initially used for power boat races, it became a location for concerts, sunrise services and many other community events. Initial cost of the Stadium was $2 million.

The Stadium was closed in 1992 after Hurricane Andrew. An engineering study commissioned by the City at the time stated that the damage was modest and could be repaired for approximately $1 million. Unfortunately, the repairs were not made.

The Virginia Key Master Plan has recently been initiated by the City of Miami to develop a plan for the area. The Planning Firm EDSA is the consultant on the project. In a public charette in June of 2007, citizens demonstrated a very strong preference for renovation and renewal of the Marine Stadium.

The City has recently contracted with an engineer who did a "preliminary walk through" of the stadium. In the next few months, a more in depth engineering study will be done which will also include cost estimates for repair. The Friends of the Marine Stadium will carefully review this engineering analysis.

According to the City, EDSA plans to contact key stakeholders over the course of the summer of 2008. They expect to unveil a preliminary planning report some time in the fall.

Through analysis, advocacy, historic designation, outreach to interested parties and political organization, the Friends of Miami Marine Stadium seeks to make sure that that this remarkable structure is an important part of the Virginia Key Master Plan and resumes its role as a unique and special gathering place for the citizens of Miami.
