Description

(Polygon and vertex counts represent only those in the 3DS format, enumerated using Deep Exploration 6.5 CAD Edition.)

“The Fifty II” is a collection of the United States 50 states—plus the U.S. continent as a whole—in fully textured 3D. Three-D files were generated by displacing high-density NURBS mesh planes (30Ux30V) using high-contrast grayscale heightmaps; the 16-bit grayscale displacement maps (PNG) also are included, at 96 dpi. Color texture files—16-bit PNG—are included at 96 dpi. Included 3D file formats are: 3DM (Rhinoceros/MOI); 3DS (3D Studio); 3MF (3D printing); C4D (Cinema 4D/r. 9.603/secondarily native); DAE (Collada/common interchange); DXF (Autodesk universal CAD); FMZ (formZ/geometry only); IV (Autodesk Inventor); OBJ (Wavefront/common interchange); R3D (Realsoft 3D/v. 8.2.56/native); U3D (interactive 3D/PDF); WRL (interactive 3D/VRML97 [2]); X3D (interactive 3D/WRL successor). The original project-native 3D format files, in R3D, each include textures as compressed archives (ZIP) with the geometry, just as the C4D projects. All other 3D formats simply are compressed archives (ZIP), per format. (The State of Hawaii comprises two 3D files—one for Oahu (main island) only, and all eight islands in the other mesh.)

A bonus feature included in the package is each wireframe-overlaid, displaced and textured state composited to include the state flag on a pole (3D output/TGA alpha) and an “information board” (3D output/TGA alpha) specifying each state’s declared “territory” date, date of institution as a state, and the “State #” (chronologically ordered among the 50). Each information-board sign (on a pole) has a dark-green background, thinly overlaid white horizontal scores, the state’s flag, and the state’ s seal inside a magnifying glass. Each state’s population figure also is included inside a gold rectangle (rounded), set off from the geometry by a two-segment line annotation. These composites are in the Adobe Photoshop (PSD output) and Affinity Photo 2.6 (AFPHOTO/native) formats, as layered files, all at 96 dpi (1920x1080). Gaussian-blurred “cast” shadows (“skewed” for realism) have been positioned behind the flag/flag pole and information board in each layered file.
