The AT-6 was an armed version of the T-6 Texan by North American Aircraft. It served as a marksmanship trainer for the Army Air Forces, Navy, Marines and other allied forces during World War II. The armed version (AT-6) generally had two 30 caliber machine guns in the nose in front of the cockpit and one or two 30 caliber machine guns in the rearward facing gunners seat.

It also was pressed into service as a ground support aircraft in almost every theater of operation during the early part of World War II war as a ground attack aircraft. After the war many were sold to third world countries and remained in service with air forces around the world.

Most were retired in the 1950s and 1960s from active service. In the US the Air Force had inherited the aircraft and retained them into the 1050s when they were replaced. These aircraft were sold as surplus to civilian pilots and were used as trainers, aerobatic airplanes for air shows and were restored to represent versions that had seen combat or training service in WWII. Many were transferred to the Civil Air Patrol and there would serve as a search and rescue platform as well as an advanced trainer. Civil Air Patrol phased these out in the late 1960s. Now the AT-6 and T-6 are in the hands of hundreds of private owners who take great care in maintaining and flying these aircraft.
