Description

This is a high detail model of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Technical Notes:

All major components needed to animate the unfolding of the telescope, shields, and solar panels are parented and pivoted for such animation. The Solar shields themselves are relatively low poly such that you can develop a series of 2 or 3 blend shapes for them to animate unfolding (the model only includes the shields fully deployed).

All surfaces are smoothable meaning they will not grossly deform if you want to smooth them additionally, the extra edge support exists for this to work.

Beneath all shield wrapped components there are frame and detail elements (see renders). In the Maya model these can be disabled by hiding the Foil Layer.

Textures

4K Color and Normal Maps exist as do Photoshop Templates for the Solar Shields. The Solar Panels have Color, Normal, and Specular Maps and also include Photoshop Templates (download Separately).

History

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope designed primarily to conduct infrared astronomy. The most powerful telescope ever launched into space, its greatly improved infrared resolution and sensitivity will allow it to view objects too old, distant, and faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This is expected to enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of astronomy and cosmology, such as observations of first stars and the formation of the first galaxies, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets. JWST was launched in December 2021 on an ESA Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana, and as of May 2022 is undergoing testing and alignment. Once operational, expected about the end of June 2022, JWST is intended to succeed the Hubble as NASA's flagship mission in astrophysics. (Wikipedia)
