'HMS Surprise' was a famous 6th rate sailing ship of the Napoleonic Era. Too small to be a frigate, it would have been considered a 'Post Ship' meaning it needed an officer 'post captain' to sail. The real Surprise started life as the French ship 'Unite' before it was captured in 1796 but this depiction is a conversion of an older ship 'HMS Rose (1757)' made to resemble Surprise, following the story of the real replica ship.
