Description

Japanese Ryokan Inn: a high-detail Japanese ryokan inn of the Edo period (1603 to 1868) at real-world size (11.9 x 11.0 x 9.5 m), 121,100 triangles.

An Edo-period ryokan, a hatago inn of a post town on the old highways, two full storeys and about 10.8 x 9 m in plan: a six-bay street front of brown timber with fine koshi lattices and a wide double entrance of sliding board doors under a tiled pent roof; an upper floor of continuous shoji behind an overhanging balustrade on brackets, with plastered udatsu firewalls at both ends capped by a tile ridge and a small onigawara; white plaster walls with an exposed timber frame and a hongawara tile gable roof with onigawara. No signs, noren, lanterns or ropes.

Details:
- Built piece by piece: every roof tile, lattice bar, shoji bar, baluster, bracket, board and stone is its own part with softly bevelled edges, yet light enough to repeat along a street.
- Blender file: the original procedural PBR materials, exactly as rendered in the gallery: brown keyaki timber, white plaster, washi shoji paper, hongawara clay tiles and granite, with a variation per piece, ambient-occlusion grime and subtle noise.
- 3ds Max, FBX, OBJ, glTF and USD: the same look baked into 6 unique 4096 px PBR texture sets on a non-overlapping UV: Base Color, Roughness, Metallic, Normal (OpenGL and DirectX), AO and packed ORM.
- A generic building of the period: no signs, brands or trademarks.
- 121,100 triangles, 80,065 vertices; one object; ground at z = 0, front facing -Y, metres, real-world size.
- Exterior model with dark backing behind the lattices and shoji; no furnished interior. Light and game-friendly: no LODs or collision meshes.

Fourth building of the Edo Japan town set, with the machiya townhouse, kura storehouse and gassho farmhouse. Also see the Edo temples, pagoda, castle keep and Shinto shrine.

Formats: Blender 3.2+ (native, procedural materials), 3ds Max 2022+ (Physical Material), FBX 7.4, glTF 2.0 binary (textures embedded), OBJ and USD (UsdPreviewSurface); the exchange formats use the baked texture sets. Maya and Cinema 4D users: import the included FBX or USD.

All renders shown were made in Blender Cycles with the included Blender file; no post-processing.
