Description

Birthplace: Germany, 30s
Creators: Mart Stam, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

As the architect Mies van der Rohe stated: “A chair is a very complex object. Building a skyscraper is much easier.” Despite its minimalist design, the Bauhaus chair has a not-so-simple history.

In the 30s in Germany at the exhibition "Housing" modernist designers presented a new interior concept: a minimum of light and functional furniture made of steel tube. Steel was seen as the epitome of the industrial age. One of these innovative solutions was proposed by the Dutchman Mart Stam. It was a simple cantilever chair made of gas pipes connected by standard angles. The prototype was a car seat.

The design of the Bauhaus chair is based on the idea that a chair does not need four legs when a single S-rod can be used to support the seat. Mies van der Rohe proposed his own solution with a graceful semi-circular silhouette that served as a spring element and corresponded to the weight of the human body.

This chair embodies the main principle of the architect "less is more".

Today, Bauhaus style cantilever chairs are a classic, basic design element in many interiors. The Brno chair even became the subject of a 2005 BBC film. The creators of the picture recognized it as one of the 80 "treasures" - the most significant works of contemporary art.
