KAWS is an American graffiti artist and designer known for his toys, paintings, and prints. Pop Art and culture permeate his cartoonish Companion series of figurines, which bear a resemblance to the works of Takashi Murakami. KAWS is a multi-faceted artist straddling the worlds of art and design in his prolific body of work that ranges from paintings, murals, and large-scale sculptures to product design and toy-making. His iconic “XX” signature has its roots in the beginning of his career as a street artist in the 1990s, when he began altering found advertisements by incorporating his own masterful paintings. Evoking the sensibilities of Pop artists like Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg, KAWS possesses a sophisticated humor and thoughtful interplay with consumer products and collaborations with global brands. He often draws inspiration and appropriates from popular culture animations to form a unique artistic vocabulary and influential cast of hybrid cartoon and human characters.

Donnelly chose the moniker KAWS because he liked the way the letters looked together. As well as being established in the graffiti art world, the name is distinguished within the fine art world. In the late 1990s, KAWS began designing and producing limited edition vinyl toys, which became an instant hit in the global toy-collecting community. More recently, KAWS has designed toys and clothing for prominent companies such as Original Fake, Undercover, Kung Faux, Comme des Garcons, Vans and Nike. KAWS worked with Nike and Uniqlo in 2017 to produce clothing items inspired by his unique and distinctly recognizable iconography inspired by his fascination of the cartoon world. Brian Donnelly a.k.a Kaws was born in 1974 in Jersey City (USA). He began painting on walls and trains in the early 1990s in New York. His made his work different from others by diverting advertising posters on bus stops and telephone booths, and adding small characters : “skully” the pirate skull with crossbones shortened to form ears, or “bendy” the extended head of a snake body wrapped around the person featured in the advertising poster. In 1996, he obtained a degree in Fine Arts from the New York School of Visual Arts. He then began working as a freelance artist for Disney, creating animated backgrounds. His accomplishments as an artist met a real success, and he started travelling to Paris, London, Germany, Japan.
