This New York Central & Hudson River Railroad 4-4-0 (eight-wheeler, American) steam locomotive was built by the NYC&HRR's master mechanic, William Buchanan, in 1877. Very similar in construction to the record-setting 999 which now resides in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL, this wood burning locomotive would have been a very good general-purpose locomotive capable of handling both passenger and freight service. The tender is equipped with a water scoop, partially modelled herein, which allowed it to pick up water for the tender as it was rolling down the tracks by lowering a scoop into what was called a 'track pan' in the middle of the track, which were filled with water from a local water source such as a spring. Construction of this engine predates the common usage of modern couplers, and as such the cowcatcher, or pilot as it's more properly called, is equipped with a link-and-pin coupling, and the tender is equipped with a pocket to accept a link. There are no air brakes on this locomotive, again because construction of it predates the common usage of air brakes. The pressure relief is also very interesting, in that it appears to be adjustable to give the engineer the ability to over-pressurize the boiler. The valve gear is standard Stephenson valve gear with outside admission pistons and slide valves. Oil-burning headlight.
This model, an ongoing preservation project for a long-gone model of locomotive, is designed to be as accurate and complete as possible. As an example, the staybolts have telltale holes drilled in them where appropriate. This version is a simplified version for animation rendering with some of the internal detail trimmed down for better polygon usage. All visible surfaces of this model should be within 1/32' of as-designed for 1877. Surfacing has been based on an actual reference photo of this particular engine. There are no texture maps on the locomotive itself - all detail is modelled. For example, the lettering on the side of the tender has a thickness to it, just as it did on the original, to give excellent quality for closeup shots. A section of period-appropriate track is also included.
Native format is Lightwave LWO, with converted formats of OBJ and COLLADA. Also included is a 1024x1024 texture map for the wood texture of the ties - the only texture map used for this model.
