The 'Calessino' was founded in 1948 as one of the many versions of the 'Ape' motorcycle, a three-wheel transformation of the 'Vespa'. The name 'calessino' derives from the appearance of the first model, consisting of the body of a normal Vespa which had been added, fixedly, a sort of sofa on two wheels, contained in a shell of sheet finished in wood and covered by a semicircular awning bellows, resulting in fact very similar to a horse-drawn buggy. The intention of Piaggio was to build an economic vehicle, designed for short-haul human transport, suitable for the numerous tourist resorts of the peninsula which, after the conflict, returned to being a destination for foreign vacationers, especially from northern Europe and United States of America.

The model received immediate success. The contents of purchase and maintenance costs and, above all, the reduced overall dimensions, made it the ideal vehicle for moving in the ancient villages of the Tyrrhenian and island seaside resorts, often served by narrow and steep roads.

Not even the advent of the popular car, in the late fifties, managed to undermine the use of the 'Calessino' which, even for the following decade, will be the protagonist of the 'dolce vita' on the Ligurian and Tuscan coasts, as well as on the coast amalfitana, in Capri and in the Flegree islands.

If the success in Italy of the 'Ape Calessino' was notable, even if limited to the tourist sector, in the Asian countries it became a real best seller. Perhaps due to its similarity to the exotic rickshaw, it spread throughout Southeast Asia as a means of public transportation known as tuk-tuk, the name onomatopoeic deriving from the characteristic noise produced by the 2T engine at the minimum regime. In India it was imported until the first half of the 1950s, but due to the enormous demand, a company was built to build it on site under license. In Bangkok it became one of the most famous symbols of the city.
The Calessino of Napolitano

Ended in the late seventies, the production of 'Calessino' was resumed, in 2007, with a series of 999 specimens, built with the same technical characteristics of the previous model, except for the engine, replaced with a diesel engine. Another substantial difference can be found in the rather demanding purchase price of 8,590 euros.

On June 25, 2008, two light gray Ape Calessino and white hood with papal coat of arms were presented to Benedict XVI. On 16 September 2008, also the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano received as a gift an Ape Calessino with a dark blue hood and body, bearing the presidential signs.

In July 2013 a new version of the series called 'Calessino 200' wa
