I wanted to create an average face, in the hopes that it could be used as a clean starting point for any number of types of characters.
Let me say now that creating a truly average face is a lot harder than it sounds, especially when you consider things like age, race, and gender.
I took a lot of my inspiration from the Jedermann Project, which involved taking hundreds of photographs of human faces and creating composite images. At this time, unfortunately, the site for the Jedermann Project seems to be down. I used their work as a starting point, as well as a number of images of eyes, ears, noses, and mouths that I gathered on my own.
I have included texture maps for the face and eyes developed as part of the image composite process.
Hair is not included for several reasons. While it might be interesting to try and generate 'average hair', I didn't really see as much value in it. Also, there are many ways to create hair, and I want my customers to be able to decide for themselves which one they want to use.
