The German Army soon discovered a need for artillery support to keep up with fast moving armored formations. Several designs using Panzer I, Panzer II and Panzer III chassis were developed but the chassis proved to be overloaded or crew protection was inadequate. Alkett of Berlin came up with a solution by mounting the s.IG 33 150mm howitzer on the Pz 38(t) Auf H chassis powered by a 150 horse power engine. They were referred to as the Grille although some referred to them as Bison. Ninety of these vehicles were built between February and April 1943. These vehicles were used up to the end of the war. They appeared on the Eastern, Western and Italian fronts.
