A collection of 6 animated and rigged coconut palm trees. The animation consists of cached animation on the leaves and flowers that loop seamlessly over 4 seconds. Please download the animation where you can see 4 wind cycles in a row. 4 seconds may seem short, but its very hard to spot the repetition. With an animated camera it is all but impossible to notice the repetition.

For non-Maya users there are also Alembic files included. You will have to copy the texture files from the Maya folder and build your own shaders though. The alembic files have been made with a step size of 4 frames to keep the cache files a bit lighter. This is invisible to the eye. I have disabled the trunk crush lattice while exporting the abc files, so you will have to cut the trunks to length manually.

To make sense of the naming: The number 1 means a straight tree, the number 2 means a leaning tree. You can make all trees lean, but making the tree crowns lean over looks weird. Therefore the leaves and coconuts in the number 2 trees are angled correctly. This does mean that one should not turn the crowns of the number 2 trees around their axis. The trees that have Large in their name have 29 leaves. Medium means 26 leaves and Small means 23 leaves.

The rig allows you to change the amplitude and speed of the animation with attributes on the top control curve. Animating these attributes will give more variation to the animation. The rest of the rig allows you to shape the trunk and roots in many ways: You can lengthen and shorten the trunk without stretching the textures (The trunk above the crown gets crushed by a lattice deformer), you can add noise to the shape of the trunk, you can change the thickness and profile of the trunk and you can make the trunk curve anyway you like.

The trunk is textured with 4096 x 4096 textures for diffuse color, specular color, normal map and displacement map (by default, it has the displacement map). The roots are textured with a 2048 x 2048 for diffuse color. The leaves are textured with 4096 x4096 textures for color, specular color and normal map, and a 2048 x2048 map for translucence. The coconuts, the flowers and the fibrous cloth like sheets are textured with 2048 x 2049 textures for diffuse color, specular color, normal map and opacity.

The scenes are set up in centimeters, and though the length of the trunks are adjustable, there is a maximum length of 13 meters for the trunk, making the total height including the roots and the leaves 18.2 meters.
