The Allen Engine Company, located in New York City, was a well known maker of small “Mill Engines” of a type commonly found in textile mills, machine shops and small fabricating plants. This 50 HP engine was typical, and exhibits the ‘Porter Ball Governor’ used to regulate the speed, as well as the noteworthy ‘Allen Valve Gear’.

They were used most often to power small factories and textile plants, pumping plants, and small machine shops. They ran slowly and gracefully, and were especially quiet in operation.

The Model
The CAD model was created in SolidWorks™ as one of my projects in the field of Industrial Archeology (IA). It was reverse engineered from an 1890 Builder’s Catalogue which fortunately included scaled drawings.

It is a highly detailed 409,294 poly model suitable for extreme close-ups, and is ideal for inclusion into period scenes and shop environments from the late 19th Century to the early 1920’s. All parts are modeled to allow for easy animation. Certain parts are actually one “part” to represent a rather complex assembly. All appropriate parts and surfaces are UV mapped.

Converted from SolidWorks™ to .obj using SimLab Composer. Preview renderings from the .obj were created in KeyShot2 from Luxion. The enlarged image available as a download shows the Porter-Allen Engine in a typical environment; the handrail and large (leather) drive belt are not included in the primary .obj, but are included as separate .obj files in the zip.
