Nymphe dite Arthuse (Nymph, also known as Arethusa was commissioned in 1706 from Claude Poirier and Jean Hardy to replace a lead cast of the Nymph produced around 1705. The marble statue was completed in 1711 by Poirier alone, and placed as a companion piece to Jacques Prous Amphitrite, on one of the fountains decorated with imitation rocks and large, colorful leaden birds, in the grounds of the Chteau de Marly.

Since 1933, sculpture groups from Marly have been exhibited in the Cour Marly, where the Nymph, listed as a national treasure and purchased with the financial assistance of the AGFcompany, has now joined the Amphitrite by Jacques Prou, which was purchased by the Louvre in 1975 after being identified in a sale without catalogue.
