The original design was called the ‘Ferdinand’. After the battle of Kursk, they were recalled and modified and received the name ‘Elefant’. Extra armor, an MG 34 in the hull, wider tracks and installation of a commander’s cupola. Despite its drawbacks of being too slow, the ‘Elefant’ was a very formidable design. ‘Elefant’ might well have been the most successful tank destroyer employed during the war, having an average ratio of approximately 10:1.
