This is a completely original, hand-drawn, old-style pirate/treasure/world map with influences from maps from yesteryear as well as fantasy maps in a similar style seen in movies, video games, etc.
The model is quite simple, just a thick 3D polygonal plane bent a little into a map shape with some ability to animate, but most of the work went into the 2048x2048 texture. The original maps could be used as a shininess/gloss map if desired or if you're using a fancier renderer.
There's lots of little detail if you look closely, so even a quick render shows more detail than can be examined briefly.
My intention is to build out a bunch of assets based on this fictional world map which you're also free to name yourself.
This would be a good prop on the desk of a Sea Captain on a Spanish Galleon or a bunch of other uses.
This is set up for a scanline renderer or as a raw asset for your higher-end rendering, game-engine, etc. No extra plugins needed.
This was done in Max 2011 (and Photoshop) but there are many other formats available.
