Karagoz and Hacivat are the lead characters of the traditional Turkish shadow play, popularized during the Ottoman period and then spread to most nation states that comprised the Ottoman Empire and most prominently in Turkey and Greece. (wikipedia)
**For instance, the drunkard Tuzsuz Deli Bekir, a character in karagoz, represented the tough Janissaries. The Janissaries formed basic military force of the Ottoman Empire prior to annihilation of these units by the Sultan Mahmut II in 1826 when they sparked rebellions from their own coffeehouses. In karagoz plays this rowdy character has a dagger in one hand and a wine pot in the other. He lets out a yell and is proud of killing his mother, father, and 999 others. This character was removed from the plays when the Janissary force was eliminated.
