Ankylosaurus is a herbivore that emerged from the Jurassic but spread rapidly during the Cretaceous Period. Slow moving and covered with thick, nearly impenetrable armor they measured anything from 20-30 ft long, weighing as much as 5 tons. The most notable feature of Ankylosaurus was the tough, armor covering its head, neck, back and tail. This armor was made up of osteoderms, deeply embedded plates of bone, covered by a thick layer of keratin. Ankylosaurus lived in the near tropical climate of Late Cretaceous North America, but it's relatives, the genus Ankylosaurs, can be found all over the world.
