This tall case weight-driven clock mechanism, or “works”, is typical of their exceptional rural craftsmanship. It does not include a striking (chimes or bell) mechanism, and thus was called a “timepiece”.
My SolidWorks™ CAD model was based on illustrations and dimensions in With Hammer in Hand. It is one of my projects in the field of Industrial Archeology (IA).
The model is an accurate reconstruction, and would make an excellent “scientific instrument” prop for CG imaging and rendering. The high resolution model has 262,774 polys, and offers excellent close-up rendering. All appropriate surfaces/features are UV mapped. The model contains all the wheels (gears), arbors and plates, and could be easily animated using appropriate software.
I have received many inquiries for IGES files from teachers to use in CNC, woodworking and metalworking courses in middle-school to college level. The Dominy Clock is a fascinating object of historical importance even today, and offers a multi-disciplinary “class project” for students. I have not made a physical prototype from the SolidWorks or IGES files, so I cannot warrant its accuracy as to fit. However, it was designed to standard clockmaker’s standards.
The SolidWorks file was converted to .obj using SimLab Composer. The IGES file was created from within SolidWorks. The preview renders were created in KeyShot-2 from Luxion.
