The planets are UV mapped with .bmp textures. Textures are 3000 x 1500 for .max files and 2048 x 1024 for other file formats –power of two for real-time engines. If you would like the higher resolution textures for these other formats simply download the .max zip files.
Max files include an atmosphere effect and a basic rotating animation for each that will not be present in other file formats. Rings for formats other than .max are supplied via .tga files as well as a color and alpha maps. They are not built into the models to prevent z sorting errors some real-time engines encounter. If you need help getting the rings placed around the planets, I’m more than willing to help.
The jewel of the collection is the Earth-like planet. The .max version has a separate cloud layer that rotates at a different speed than the planet and also a specular map. You can preview the render in reduced resolution by downloading the “Terra Movie.zip” file. It is in .mov format (Quicktime). The Earth-like planet for other formats is all one texture, but maps are included in the .max files if you would like to create separate spheres for the clouds and land.
There will always be some distortion when wrapping a texture around a sphere –usually most visible at the poles, but great lengths have been gone to fix this distortion. Download the “Polar Fix Examples.zip” and see before and after shots.
