Turbo Squid named New Orleans City Business’ Innovator of the Year

Local New Orleans business newspaper recognizes Turbo Squid as Innovator of the Year for its unique concept and contribution to the community’s economy

(New Orleans, LA – June 29, 2006) - TurboSquid is honored to announce that the newspaper New Orleans City Business has chosen the company as Innovator of the Year. Turbo Squid received the gold award in Innovator of the Year, a special edition of City Business which profiles innovative companies, educators and nonprofit organizations in the local community. The article focused on the unique concept that has led Turbo Squid to success and Turbo Squid’s pioneering efforts to build the video game in Louisiana, a completely new industry for the state.

Tommy Santora, Associate Editor of City Business states that the “Gold Award went to a New Orleans-bred technology company that has risen leaps and bounds in their six years of existence.”

The article focused partially on the vision of Turbo Squid founders Matt and Andy Wisdom for seeing an open marketplace and providing a platform for 3D artists to share work over the internet. “Turbo Squid began in 2000 as an originator of 3D animation for television commercials. After designing 3D models of cell phone handsets for a Radiophone advertisement, Matt and his brother Andrew noticed similar 3D models produced by other companies and wondered why there was no way for graphic artists to share their own models,” writes Thomas Legget, author of the article. Turbo Squid’s unique concept paired with its innovative business model have allowed the company to be the market leader with a library of over 140,000 3D products.

The article also focused on Turbo Squid’s dedication to improving the Louisiana economy by helping draft The Louisiana Digital Media Act, which should attract a new industry to Louisiana. Turbo Squid’s unique position will allow the company to achieve this even under the difficult circumstances of the struggling post Hurricane Katrina economy. Co-founder and President Matt Wisdom led the effort to draft and pass the Louisiana Digital Media Act, which provides incentives for members of the video game and digital media industry to operate in the state. “While ensuring the continued growth of Turbo Squid, Wisdom hopes to accomplish something more comprehensive for the New Orleans economy,” writes Legget. “This legislation should eventually attract members of the video gaming industry and other digital media to New Orleans,” said Wisdom.
