You start by picking from the list of locations* in the family where you are designing, place the family on your building wall, then you enter in the dimensions of the opening you are designing the overhang for, and your done!
Based on the minimum and maximum sun angles for your location, this family will automatically adjust the length of the overhang to passively design for the sun.
The concept behind shading devices is to block as much of the summer sun as possible to avoid heat gain and reduce cooling costs in your building during the summer. Then in the winter allow as much of the low winter sun into your building to increase heat gain and reduce heating costs.
Other options available in this family:
1. Adding a vertical sun shade to either the left, right, or both sides, of your opening to help keep out that pesky early morning and late afternoon sun. Complete with adjustable thicknesses and lengths. By default the vertical fins match the length of the overhang, then you choose to add more or less as needed for your design.
2. Material for the overhang/shading device.
Limitations of the family:
1. Overhang lengths are designed for due south (northern hemisphere) or due north (southern hemisphere) building faces. Some adjustments to overhang lengths may be needed to suit rotated building faces, use the vertical fins as necessary to help as well.
2. This family is designed for sea level elevation and does not account for site specific elevations. While this might create some minor inaccuracies for the sun angle, these are so slight that it has been considered negligible for building design.
