Prince Mikhail Golenishchev-Kutuzov was the Russian Field Marshal who defeated the Napoleon's Grande Army during Napoleon's invasion of Russia of 1812, the decisive turning point of the Napoleonic Wars.
Kutuzov's paternal ancestor fled to Russia from Greece to escape the Turkish occupation. The family's original surname was Koutouzis, russified as Kutuzov upon their settling in Russia in the sixteenth century.
