The F123-class frigates, also called Brandenburg-class, were conceived for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) with secondary Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) capability for self-defense purposes only. The Type 123 ships have stealth features (reduced radar signature) for improved survivability. The German Navy ordered 4 F124-class frigates in the 1990s. The F123 frigates were built employing modular construction reducing the time and costs for such an operation. The ships include growth potential, advanced sensors and anti-aircraft systems. They can accommodate Lynx helicopters and were armed with Exocet and Seasparrow missiles, torpedoes, small caliber guns and a single 76mm gun. The first F123-class frigate was commissioned by the German Navy in 1994.
