| The SDU-5 was the primary, military issue rescue and signal strobe issued to US forces during the 1990's. Although the SDU-5 has officially been retired from active service, surplus SDU-5s have been used as expendable strobes. Additionally, surplus SDU-5s have made their way into civilian hands. The SDU-5 is primarily used by pilots, boaters, hunters and other individuals who need a reliable way to be quickly identified or located during adverse weather conditions.
