you can use it with 3ds max 9.0 but you can work with *.3ds for the (*.max) work only with v9 it's only 350 poly for more details olso add mesh smoth !!!when you import the *.3ds (fly male low.3ds) the model is in editable mesh, convert it in editable poly and for working with the low poly(350) add a smoth modifier and make its threshold to 180, and else than that smoth you can add a mesh smoth or turbosmoth or play with the smoth in the editable poly (subdivision surface). and good work and thank you.
