Description
Herculaneum, along with Pompei, was destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. These ruins have been dug out of the volcanic material which was mostly mud which preserved much of the town. Pompei on the other hand, was destroyed by mostly rock and ash.
