The East doors of the Baptistry in Florence, Italy
Description
The East doors of the Florence Baptistry were commissioned in 1401 to mark the city's deliverance from the plague. Lorenzo Ghiberti was chosen after a competition. Michelangelo enthusiastically dubbed the doors the 'Gate of Paradise'. The ten bronze relief panels depict scriptural subjects.
