This is a shot of one of the gun batteries of Fort Washington in Maryland. The fort was built to prevent the enemy from gaining access to the Capitol via the waterway (Potomac River) but several batteries were built preceeding WWII to strengthen coastal security. These batteries housed 'disappearing guns' that would recoil and retract downward (out of sight) after firing. The fort is directly across the river from Monticello in Virginia.
