The AC-47 aircraft showing the three 7.62 gatling guns in the door and windows.
Description
This photo taken in Viet Nam in 1966. The AC-47 (a derivitive of the DC-3) was modified from a cargo carrier to a gunship with the addition of three gatling guns each capable of firing up to 6,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition per minute. These aircraft were known as 'Puff the Magic Dragon' or 'Spooky' and were deployed in defense of Army outposts under attack. Spooky flew only at night in this role and was so successful that it led to other, larger, gunship models being developed.
