This particular map is what the sky would look like from a position near Barnard's Star (at least according to the available databases). The program I wrote for the task rendered in 2,547,944 stars. Nearby stars are of course more accurately positioned in 3D space, Stars further away are less accurate.
Five maps were created in this first series. The second series will include more stars. Also in the works are some 'fantasy' starmaps - from positions near the galactic center, above the galactic plane, and from inside globular clusters.
