41 here... Getting gray but that's because of the wife...

Started with 3D studio when it premiered in... 1991 I think.  Invited by autodesk to chicago to attend the NCGA convention to showcase what 3DS could do (DOS first release).  Unfortunately, most of the work for me at the time was gov contracting, military stuff.  Mostly dry but gave me a great foundation for understanding graphics... Had to develop work-arounds for what we needed to do.

Plugins? LOL...

Ink!  Ouch... As for me, the gov contract we were prototyping for required that I hand render using Paint (16/256 color palette) navy aircraft to train pilots the physics of landing on a carrier.  We got the contract with that prototype, then 3DS came out.  And we got it.

It was a GODSEND!  I didn't look forward to hand rendering hundreds of graphics by hand using a mouse... in 16/256 colors.  Loved it ever since.

16 Here. started 1 to 1 and 1/2 years ago with Milkshape 1.7, the a few months ago I moved up to max. Mostly do weapons, but I'm trying to move into vehicles and characters. Don't do any animation quality works, but most of my models are more than ready for game use

Hi Simula Studio, I live in England. But I live in a small town about an hour away from Northampton. I don't think there are any courses near me but I am searching the Internet and doing as many tutorials I can. I have also been playing around with 3ds max myself and discovering new things. So far I have modelled a bench and the Windows logo and I am doing some more tutorials. I do need help with lighting and the material editor, thats a little confusing at times. I have found many tutorials, from learning to model cars from blueprints to UV Mapping. But I want to do a few more easy tutorials to become familiar with the interface and where everything is. Thats the main problem im facing at the moment. If you know where everything and what everything does you can model easier

I think if the trend of online sales in turbosquid, games, items etc....

For the creative maker, they will be able to make a more than modest income depending on skills, marketting, etc. Most people buying your work will not even know who you are what you look like or your age.

So whats great is if you have your online business, people care about the quality of product/service and not your age be it 2 or 200.....

If you want to work for some big company that may be different, but will you really need to in this age of online laptop businesses? I mean, with the quality of a lot of the game ready meshes here, a games company can just buy what they want from here and have a skeleton crew of core programmers and artists.....

Im 30 years young now....

In that time, 1991, I served in army, anti-aircraft defence, SA-2 rockets. No computer, only real rockets and launchers, and I loved them since then. So, we really could intersected :D

Andy, on the first page of this thread you wrote about himself as 39-old dark young man ;) What wrong? Oh no... just as sang The Rolling Stones, "Time Waits for No One" :)

This thread is making me feel like a can of beans that just
expired.  It's all good though, just turned 24, started using max
back in 7th grade(94-95 i think), got into it for the games
actually.  I've been an avid gamer since little, started with
atari2600 and on my family's old 286 pc running on a Hercules
monochrome video card and nothing but DOS.  Anytime I wanted to
run games on it I had to run a graphics software that made games think
they were running on ega graphics. It's a shame I don't have that pc
anymore.

I'm 44 and have been working with 3D Studio since the very earliest of days ... release1, back in 1993.

Oh, and my first computer was a TRS80 ... anyone remember those? I remember when I got a 386 upgrade from my 286 at work ... I thought it was a firebreather and I thought I was really sumpthin'! Look at me, look at me! I'm workin' on a 386! 40 meg hard drive ... oh yeah baby! That's what I'm talkin' about!

Oh, and I'm female too. How's that for widening the demographics a little bit further?

Well, I'm happy that are ladies present. I was beginning to feel there
wasn't any women in the 3D career abroad. here in Portugal, I know many
female designers that have 3D skills, but I don't see them going to
forums. They are more into 2D graphic design.

I'm 30 years old and my first model experience was in 98, when I
created some wonderfull and astonishing set of... dishes. 3D studio max
1, using lines imported from autocad. What a blast, didn't sleep for 3
days, trying to figure out how to do it, without any help.

Then, I found the help function in the program. 10 minutes later, they
where done. After that, I always search in the help file first. Max's
help is really really really great. See something you don't know what
is for, type it on help, and BLAM! very well explained.

Edit: before that, I had one night experience, looking for the "PRINT" button in Max. Good thing I didn't had an internet connection to go to a forum and post my problem. That would be embarassing. :-D

There aren't many in the U.S. that I've ever found. There's only one other in the city I live (that I'm aware of) in and I'm in a city of over 4 million! You're right, females tend to stay in 2D stuff. Why? I have no idea. I've been obsessed with 3D since I first knew there was such a thing. I HAD to get into it!!! That was about 18 years ago. I'm not too upset that it's a male dominated industry ... males tend to be easier to work with anyway, so it's cool.
