From what I've seen, this group ranges from about 10-60 years old...now that's a huge demographic.

Maybe TS can provide some demographics like that based on their vendor data...

I am 27 going on 28 and I look forward to still being a teenager in my 30s too.

I started 3D work properly in 1997/8 using an early version of Archicad in my college that would render a wireframe still in 10 minutes! Then I got fed up as I saw the furniture designers using 3DS Max and it all looked better so I started using that.

Im sure the newer versions of archicad are very nice though.

James.

Mine was a Spectrum plus 128K.

Then I got an Atari ST, they were great!

I still have the ST, are they worth anything these days?

Okay, here's one from the flintstones....

Learning to program using punch cards in high school...

Moving up to the school's DEC-10 with punched paper tape...

And at home, getting a butt-kicking TI-99...

... and graduating to a VIC 20 with a tape recorder to read/store programs from audio cassettes... (I think it had 20k for storage and processing)

NOW THAT'S POWER!

Here's another ancient. . .

My first computer was a Sinclair Spectrum boosted to 48k RAM, with a tape recorder for data storage (it's sitting on my shelf -- funny how PCs grew much larger since, even with the miniaturization trend). Loading a simple 16k program off tape would take forever and would frequently be aborted because one bit was read wrong.

I took "Computer study" as an extra subject in high school and for three years we never once saw a computer. We simply filled out program forms, submitted them and the following week received a stack of punch cards and a printout showing a huge cascade of errors (either because the punchcard operator made a typo or because I didn't really have the hang of programming!).

Computing in university wasn't much better. I had to use a dumb terminal in a room of about 40 terminals, all connected via a single modem (probably only about 300 baud back then). The signal would go all the way downtown via the phone lines and all the way back to the data center just one floor above. Once a half dozen or so students were on the terminals, I would have to wait an interminally long time for every key press to get a response. It's a wonder I wasn't permanently scarred from ever using a computer again!
You kids don't know how lucky you are!!

Well, I'm 31 now and started 3d modelling in 1998 with Autocad. In 2001 moved to SDRC iDEAS (thanks to the company I work for) and it's only a good 3-4 months that I've been devoured by 3DS max 5 and Lightwave. Still struggling with both of them but eventually I'll be there!.. i hope

What about the Tandy Color Computers? I had the Color Computer II with 64k, I think. We upgraded it to 128k! That way we could admire the breath taking graphics of Kings Quest IV.

Started modelling in, hmm, back in 91/92 I gather, on Amiga 500, in an obscure (but nice) raytracer proudly called Real3D. Who can beat that, eh eh eh (except Andy T.Rex)? Improved results by _pixellating_ in Deluxe Paint. What a pain! What a horrible waste of time in retrospect :) !
And I lost those files a long time ago. Sigh.

I'm thirty (years) of age and have been working in broadcast over the past eleven years. Recently, I've considered the possibility of moving myself into a new career path (or at least a new hobby/interest) - being 3D production/art.

Am presently studying 3dsmax6 in school part time. I work full time so that I can pay for the software and the instruction fees. Student prices are not too shabby though.

My guess is the 3D production industry will be dominated by the younger generation in the years to come. I say this because they're the ones that have the greatest amount of time on their side.

Older than wire mesh modeling
Posted 02-Mar-2004 9:01 PM

I'm 46 and have been in the industrial sculpture biz since '82 when I worked for my Dad (contractor for Auto companys /Ford retiree.) My first computer was built on a piece of wood from a drawing in Popular Science (AND gates) and did nothing more than play organ music tones or light lights (used a coffee can for strobe effects.) Eventually I built a host of different gates or circuits and solved elementary math formulas with it.
Anyway, I'm novice to alot of the modelling software but anxious to get started. I teach Microsoft Certification classes and some of my streetkids model impressive skins with some rudimentary tools. I'm looking to expand my Graphics curriculum to modelling (some of these kids are THAT good) and am looking for the most bang for the buck in an editor. Any suggestions GREATLY apreciated.
