wave displacement

I have a small row boat and want to make the water (Reactor) to seem as if the boat is really in the water so with movement there will be displacementas the boat moves as well. Any suggestions? Thanks Eddie

Max 2009 has, under help, a topic called Water Simulation...  It says:

The reactor Water object allows you to simulate the behavior of a water surface. Objects can interact with the water in physically realistic ways, creating waves and ripples. reactor calculates a buoyancy value for any objects that fall into the water using their mass and size, so that some objects sink and others float. You can even change the density of a water object, which affects how objects float in it.

If you wanna use the reactor i can look at my max bible and tell you! but i am still waiting for my game title to render bloody thing been rendering for 18 hours about 2 hours remaining lol

anyway!

create a new file in max crate a box in the top view, first box key in these's numbers L 1020.W 1037.267 H 334.04 clone that box and move it inside the first box with the second box showing through the top

box 2 L  918.875 W 923. H 334.04 choose the first box boolean it compound objects boolean once thats done your box should kind of look like a small padling pool for children. choose spacewarp(s) reactor put the water inside the pool.

size X 896.649 and size Y 916.428. bring the water up in the front view so it's above the top of the pool. put 3 spheres select the left sphere and open Property editor with the reactior set the mass to value of 3kg with the midde sphere set that mass to 100kg. and the final sphere mass to 50000kg

check your animators in the preview windowselect reactor peview animation press the p key to play your animation.

record the animation key with the reactor create animation menu command

Select create plane L 883.463 W 929.614 put that plane inside your box and move it up in the front view so it the same as the water. so the water and plane are (is) the same size. then click bind the plane to the water.

open the mat editor and create a blue color swap like a kind of water effect with opacity val is at 20 and spec is at 75 asign this mat to the plane

oppps add a ridage body in front RB collection properity click add button all the spheres and box.

end of tutorial

preview window  only notice how the mass value determines wheether the spheres float or sink.

best way ::
1) noise position on Z_Axis with very low frequency
2) noise rotation on X_Y_axis also with very low frequency

note: this type of animation is better used on helper objects rather than the object itself.

cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrs

Still working on it as well I am trying to get the water to splash up against the bow of the boat using superspray and wind but for some reason I am having trouble with the wind no matter the strength either + or - itthe spray always seems to want to go to the right side of the boat as it travels I am trying to get it to more or less gain a little height using the speed and then to get it to accummulate using the ammount in the scene per frame then I have to try to use a deflector linked to the bow of the boat.

Eddie,

it's not working because you have no presets in the superspay or are you using the shockwave that the wave presets?

Eddie,

If you have 3ds Max 7, or know someone who does, look up the tutorial on Creating Boat Splashes. The tutorial Max scene file already has the boat bobbing on the "water" surface.

Unfortunately the 3ds Max 7 tutorials are no longer available for download from Autodesk. 3ds Max 8 and up are.
