Picked 'Direct3d' instead of OpenGL, now it won't install or re-install

I have used Gmax in the past, and I didn't have the faintest idea how to use it, but that's not the point.  My point is that when I switched hard drives on my piece of crap laptop, I had to install Gmax again.  Registration went fine, but when it asked me what kind of graphics engine I was going to use, I chose Direct3D because I wasn't paying attention and thought it was DirectX (My laptop can barely handle DX 9) instead of OpenGL, which is what I used on my older hard drive.  I uninstalled it and tried to re-install, but instead of getting another registration box, it said that it couldn't find any Direct3D-compatible devices.  Is there a way I could change it to OpenGL?

BTW, what I intend to use Gmax for is to create new emergency vehicle mods for EA's SimCity 4, made by Maxis.  I already have several mod files that other people made, so I have model sources - I just need to decrease the poly count and add a box to the top of a car model or whatever as a light-bar, then (if Gmax uses 3DS files - it does, right?) import the 3DS file into a one of the DAT files that I already have made using outdated models that (mostly) came with the game. I'm an intermediate modder so I know how to put the car in-game once I have a 3DS file available.
