Hi, don't have Maya myself, but as fare as I know Maya can import the FBX file format. Exporting from C4D it seams like the FBX format is the most complete alternative. You should try this first.
Also, before exporting to FBX it might be a good idea to convert all objects like NURBS, Array and Symmetry objects to clean polygonal objects. This way you minimise the risk of "loosing" details in the export process.

If none of this helps, you may put your question into the C4D forum at www.cgsociety.org. I bet the artists there will have the answer for your probl.

I have the similar situation.  I'm working on building my 3d objects in cinema 4d, then sending them to the client in Korea. They are using Maya, so I sent them FBX files out of C4D. They said the would not even open. They asked for OBJ. How do you go from C4D to OBJ?
Help!!

Same as when you export to FBX, you just go to the bottom of that export menu and choose the Wavefront file format (which is OBJ).
Note that the materials and textures are lost in that process. They all needs to be re-linked and materials set up all over again in the Maya app.

However, if you instal the Riptide Plugin, you can convert to obj format and retain some of the materials setup - and more. I have not tested this, but it got a good reputation - and it's free.
