Natural Effects? General Guidance pretty please?
Posted 11-May-2008 9:14 AM

Hello to all,

I would like to ask if anyone could be kind enough to 'point me' in the right direction of where I can find information regarding the creation of Elements in 3DS.

By elements, I don't mean the selection tool ofcourse. I'm refering to Water, Ice, Lightning and Fire...as well explosion and pretty much all those nifty FX oriented works.

Now I know these effects CAN be done in 2.5D Softs like EyeFusion and others, but they lack certain things such as 'Collison' of said forces when them come into contact with a character or casting shadows.

If anyone could help, I would be really greateful...thanks in advance.

You can start with this site and choose the type of plug-in you might be looking for.

Thanks for the link.

There is currently with me.

First, not to undermine your post, I would prefer if I didn't waste anymore cash.

Max 2008 already was a hefty price tag (even from a relative who works in the area). So I would like to know what Plugins are really good (get the job done well) as opposed to Plugins which are a waste of cash.

I hope you understand my concern in finance.

Thanks in advance, Ace.

I did not understand you finacial difficulties till you mentioned it. How ever you think that the plugins are a waste of cash then why bother with them. What ever you do if it is not worth the investment then maybe you should not do it then this way you do not have to worry about it at all.

I myself think they are worth the money if that is what I am looking for, or you can go to the library and look up some max script and or the tutorials that came with the program but you will still not get the effects you describe. sorry but that is the only way I know to point you in. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the Plugins were useless AT ALL.

All I meant to say is which ones are good for the entire Elements department as opposed to ones that mimic another Plugins effect but are much less superior.

For example, if I wanted to Create Plants, would I better go with the Plugin 'Onyx Tree' or 'Speed Tree'?

This is what I mean. I don't have financial situation like that, all I mean is I'd much better spend my cash on multiple Plugins each one capable of an Element instead of getting 2 or 3 which do the same thing.

So far, the Plugins that I'm intersted in are:
FumeFX
AfterBurn
Particle Flow Tools
Ghost Trails
HairTrix (or HairFX)
Thinking Particles

Anyone have any advice?

not really since Max has most of the latest of what you are looking for Hair, Fire, Water, Particles and more you eed the others to intensify or highlight your effects and there is no real way around it there is no one entire suite for all of these items some of the best are not even related companies. But you can try doing some book research and do some tweaking on your own and you may surprise yourself as to how it may turn out.

Yep, thats the book I found (Deconstructing the Elements with 3ds Max). It's really neat, (although abit old since it's for Max 6 and I'm not sure how much Max 08 has changed in between them two) now I need to sit down and read it.

On a side note, just how much difference in there between Max 08 and Max 6? Is there any radical changes that could make the book obselete?
