How do I make a flat plane invisible but keep the shadows that cast onto it?
Posted 01-May-2008 12:31 PM

Basically I have a scene I want to comp over video footage, and I have the shadows in Max matched to the shadows on video.  All I need to do now is hide the ground plane but keep the shadow information, and maybe add a bump map to it to simulate the ground.

How can I hide an object but keep the shadows that are cast on to it?  There must be a way.

Right click to plane, select properties, uncheck renderable and cast shadow boxes. Assign Matte/Shadow material to the plane.

I assumed it would be a simple little box I hadn't clicked on, that's the reason I both love and hate 3ds max.

Two more questions:  The shadow Im casting doesn't have any falloff, it's just a constant thick line of shadow.  If there a way To blur the shadow as it gets further away from, the object?  I notice the real objects in my video plate do this.

And lastly, is there any way to add a bump modifier to the plane once I've told it to be a matte/shadow?  The shadow is supposed to be casting on asphalt and I'd like a bit of roughness to the shadow.

Thanks a ton guys, I'll post a picture of my results.  So far the help has been fantastic

On the spot modifier rollout parameters, play with Attenuations, Hotspot, Fallof, Contrast, Soften Diff. Edge parameters and see what happen. Also play with Shadow Map Params, Bias, Size and Sample Range.

Get a material as Matte/Shadow to editor. Get a new material as Standart and put noise to bump rollout. Adjust bump settings as you want. (Test renderings) Get another material as Blend and drag-drop the others on to the blend material and assign to the plane.

for professional purpose , render the shadow to element and recompose the scene without the diffuse of the plane .
