Rigging Clothes 3dsmax 9 Queastion
Posted 24-Apr-2008 1:05 PM

Well for a while nove I have been using the biped in 3ds max to rig
some characters, what I do is have their clothes as just poly models
and have the physique modifier on them too that way they move with the
rig and I have had no problems doing this until i added a long coat to
one of my characters and this happens i see in games alot characters
with clothes that fall behind them like coat tails but move with them
that is what I am looking for.

Am I going about this the wrong way or is there a way to make the coat
go with the character without the rig or not tear?

I don't know what you're showing in the render... but probably a wireframe might help...

Do you have enough vertices/edges to support the deforming sleeve (or whatever)?

Also what does your stack look like?

I think can add bones to a basic rig that can help with the hanging clothes...

Do you have a character with physique then the separate clothes with their own physique modifier?

Or do you have the clothes as part of the character object, then the physique?

Here is the wireframe if that helps hopeful this is what you meant, basically the coat is being affected by the rigs legs and it tears at the waste where the legs stop, I was wonding if there is anther way to rig this so that it doesn't do that, even if it's completely different from what I'm doing.

I have the clothes and the body share the same physique if I added bones to the coat would that work better?

first of all , clothes do not need to be affected with physique , they may behave very realistic when you apply on them Reactor Modifier or simply a SPRING Controller .

second , if you like to rigg the cloth with the body , i may suggest one thing : do not let the envelopps affect any vertex of the cloth , you have to include them ( cloth vertices ) one by one , and make them Deformable and about 3 or 4 links affected . be sure they are not rigid or n_links affected . when you finished including them , Press the button called "lock .. " to lock the vertex with the specified links , and to let you be able to play with the influance of each link on the vertex .

third , read the help about "Character and clothes" that comes with 3ds itself .

hope i helped .
