Depth of Field...
Mental ray has a setting but regular cameras should have it too... look under the camera's rollout parameters... there is a Depth of field Parameters group, and just above it a Multi-Pass Effect to enable...
Good idea to browse/search the tutorials and user reference that are already included in max... It won't answer everything, but the tutorials included have some good basic info...:)
