Soft Objects - how do I make them?
Posted 20-Apr-2008 2:06 PM

I am having a really hard time with making soft objects, like cushions, pillows, couches, beds, etc.  Can anyone help me or tell me where is a good place to find a tutorial or something?  Attached is a picture of a wooden couch with a cushion on it that is my most recent soft object project.  (I made the cushion with a line and then extruded it.)  I have tried all different combinations of edge slicing and cutting, tessalate, turbosmooth, chamfering, and manipulating vertexes with soft selection on.  I just can't get it to look soft and most of the time, there are extra creases and edges that I don't want in the object after I modify it with something.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!!

MeshSmooth or TurboSmooth are probably what you're after. But you don't just apply these modifiers. You need to build your model according to the effect you want, or else you'll end up with a blob.

Try a Google search on NURMS (the subdivision algorithm). It takes some practice to get used to it but it's a great tool to create soft surfaces.

Here's a little tute I did a while back on one method of making a cushion...   Modeling a cushion.
