Reactor and water
Posted 07-Apr-2008 8:50 AM

Hi Guys - hope someone can help me here.

I have animated a corporate logo coming up through a metalic liquid (waves with a metalic material) in Max 7. I would like to add some ripples when the logo comes through the liquid. Does any one know of a tutorial I could view to learn more on this? The last image is something I noted on YouTube. here, the ball landed on the water. I want to change the direction and have the object coming up and through the luquid.
Thanks in advance.

Roberto

Hi Roberto

there are two steps to creating in space warps  first you create the space warps then you Bind it to one or more objects only them object are affected by them space warps

1) start a new max file  create a quad patch then go to the create and the space warps use the drop down and choose Geometric/Deformable and create the wave in the top view set the wave to amp 1 4.0 and amp 2 to 4.0 set the wave lenth to 2.0 the phase is an animatable. So click on the autokey to the slider up-to 300 and then set the phase to 2.0 turn the autokey off, hide the patch so you can only see the wave in the left view when you move the slider then you see the wave move if you move to a 150 you see the wave moves two units. Unhide all  bind the space warps to the quad patch select the patch and then click the bind tool and press the H key and you only have one space warps in the box then click bind. Now choose render scene and choose active time range 0 to 300 now render it. you will see your wave moving.

in addition: once you add your bottom cap you will need to bind it and the wave and you'll see it move.To sum up you create the space warp, you bind objects to the space warp  you set parameters in the modifer panel and you can also move objects by using the move tool in the left viewport.

Hope this helps!

Anthony

I think this might help:

At least to get a base system set up...  You probably won't need to deal with having the object follow a path so yours may come out simpler than this... however, I'm not sure how it will react when the object surfaces...

Hi Anthony, I am lost on two bits in your note above. Sadly, space warps are new to me and I can not find out how to 'bind' the elements. The other issue is 'the phase is an animatable'. Completely lost on this! When I run the timeline, the movement happens, but when I render - nothing happens. I would want the ripples to appear when the top of the logo comes up through the wave.

Many thanks in advance.
Roberto

the bind tool is below the group box you need to press the bind tool then press H on your keyboard you should see the selection box pop up and then choose the wave when you choose the wave at the bottom of your selection box you will see bind click bind and max will bind the two objects together.

animatable once you turn on the autokey button you need to move the slider up-to 300 then move the phase up to 2.0 then turn off autokey. if you don't have the time line set to 300 you need to change the time configuratiion button that is the button between the zoom region and the 0 if you still cannot find it i have marked that as well.....

if you don't see it then you need to go into the render scene dialog and put the dot into range it says (0 to 100) change the 100 to 300 and render arr if you don't see it you may need to render out an AVi i have made a quick and dirty animation and put it on my you tube account http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aGub7M_WAU sorry i modified this to many times
