Free models from download section
Posted 16-Jan-2008 4:05 PM

This question should be sticky - i think.

I see that some files (models) are free.
By the way i want to ask about rights.
I want to put them in Open Source games.

It's allowed ?
I don't break any law ?

If there are any restriction will be nice all free models will have " Free* "
Than link about policy.

Even if an item is "free" it does not mean that you are allowed to redistribute it you should read the TS...EULA and just to be sure contact support.
however,
If you encrypt the models so that the end user can't, use edit or modify and save the models..ie: The user can only access the models during game play...then that should be ok.

The only thing free about it is the price.

So think of them the same way you think about the purchased models.  You have the same license rights as the purchased ones.  You have the right to perform the model for life.  You have an unlimited right to distribute the model in open source games as long as they are not easily accessible to the end user.

You DO NOT have the right to post the model al la carte and separate with the open source game as a mash up for instance.  If you want to do something like that simply put a turbosquid link to the asset to let the end user themself agree to the EULA and download the asset.

It may seem silly since it's free, but sometimes authors change their minds later and want to sell them.  Because they post them free for now here that doesn't mean they want you to distribute the model as if you were their agent.

We should remember that it is really impossible to:
"If you encrypt the models so that the end user can't, use edit or
modify and save the models..ie: The user can only access the models
during game play..."

It is only possible to make it more difficult for the user to do so.

In an opensource game it is even more difficult to achive this.

When distributing software with licenses it is possible to specifically prohibit model/texture digging,
but this is of course only contractual thing.

I guess the best protection is that even if somebody get to the models/textures he/she cannot use them
in his/her (commercial) projects, because he/she does not have the license to do that.
