Mapping a lathe
Posted 05-Dec-2007 3:06 AM

Wow. This is my first time in this forum.

Ok. So I'm jut learning how to use Max and getting along alright, except for this. I'm modelling the fire extinguisher below but can't figue out how to put the instructions and other labels on to the container part, which is a lathe. Does anyone have suggestions? Not sure this warrants a new thread but I'm pretty desperate. Thanks a lot.

There are a number of ways of doing this.  Here are two methods:

  • Make the label a separate surface group and apply a multi/sub-object material... creating surface groups.
  • Use a Blend material.  There's an excellent tutorial on this that comes with your copy of Max.  Go to Menu Bar > Help > Tutorials > Modeling > Modeling Level Design > Adding Mapping and Materials for the Building.

Also, you can create a single map to be cylindrically mapped onto the fire extinguisher's tank...

Make a bitmap with a red background and all labeling... Use dimentions as appropriate for your tank... Height to width ratios should be about the same between the tank and the bitmap... The height is just that... Width would be the circumference of the tank

Create a material using that bitmap and appy it to the tank...

Add a UVW Map modifier and use a cylindrical map gizmo, adjusting the gizmo to taste...

Thanks a lot guys. I'll be able to apply as many as I'd like too?

On the one I suggested it's all on a single image that you're applying... depending on how close you get to your object...

I'd say at least 1024x1024, but for readability you should go higher (powers of 2)... 2048 maybe....

The Projection modifier is used to project bumpmaps from high-rez to low-rez objects.  Not sure it'd really be of use here.
