DirectX file export?
Posted 22-Jun-2007 3:44 PM

I tried many 3D modelers and I find that GMAX is best program for me. I DON'T have money for 3D Studio MAX. Is there any way of exporting 3D models to DirectX files?

I'm not sure I understand your question. To my knowledge, DirectX is a bunch of functionalities by Microsoft for 2D, 3D, sound and Web media display and others. It's not a file format  like .gmax for gmax, .psd for PhotoShop or .txt for NotePad.

It's probably not related but you can use Direct3D (a DirectX component for 3D display) as your video driver with gmax in Customize menu > Preferences dialog > Viewports panel. Though you usely get much better results with OpenGL.

DirectX 3D mesh files. For example, car01.x file. One way is to export 3D models from GMAX to MD3 files, import MD3 files into Lithunwrap, and export to DirectX mesh files. I used the MD3 exporter written by Pop'N'Fresh and Chris Cookson. I wish that there's DirectX mesh exporter for GMAX.

Now I know a new file format. Thanks !

3D Photo Browser recognizes .x files, along with other formats that can easily (enough) be exported to gmax via some plugins. Maybe they offer a trial version ?
