Battlestar Galactica model

This is my first model I have posted on this forum. It is not quite finished but I thought I'd post what I have done. I am modelling it in gmax and it was rendered with yafray+rendersuite. So far it is 112,216 polygons

Looks awesome. What technique are you using? Box modeling? Boleans? both?

Bidonga Solina,
Its looks more the case of objects been placed inside each other without being connected, but at any rate top notch modeling!

First of all thanks for the complements. For the most part I used box modeling but to do some of those structural ribs along the hull I scaled up the box modeled hull and used a boolean intersection with lots of skinny boxes for other ribs I used the boolean cut directly on the hull and used face extrude to enlarge them. Here is another view of the model, I still need to add the engines in back which will probably be the hardest part so far.

Here is a tip, always try for a clean mesh even if the model you are making will do nothing more other than sit in a folder of yours- it is good to get into the habit of creating organised meshes, I had a problem when I started, my mesh was horrible, which is why I hardly ever use booelean anymore
good luck!

Yeah, I hate using booleans too, so if I really need them I try to only use them once on an object which usually keeps it sort of neat looking. On the battlestar, I really could not think of any other way to efficiently model those ribs.

It probably took me about two weeks to get to what you see in the top picture. Right now I'm modeling the engines which are a pain. I have not work on it in a while though, I just downloaded the 3ds max trial and I've been playing with that.

Got a question for you. Which series did you use to model the Galactica? Was it the current one or the late '70s series?

This is a model of the ship from the current series. In my opinion the current model Galactica is much more interesting looking than the ship from the original.

Here is a render of one of the four engines which will go on the back. All of the structure ribs are on and two out of five or six armor plate section are on as well.

I'd have to agree that the current Galactica design is a big improvement over the one from the first series. (I've seen both). And that engine looks pretty good. I would imagine that you're doing to clone the one you have when it's finished, instead of individually modeling each enigine individually.

Here is the latest rendering. I finished modeling the upper engines and they are attached. All I need to do to them is attach all of the little point defense machine guns.

I've finished modeling the engine section and began detailing it. This render turned out nice except the back was completly mangeled by a boolean subtraction, which I'm not going to render again soon because it takes like 2 hrs. to render a 116,000+ polygon model in rendersuite.

Despite the boolean problem, it's a pretty sweet looking render.

You say you are playing with the 3ds max trial.
Do you mean that THIS particular model is done with 3d max ?
I am asking because of the lighting/shadow looks.
If you made this with 3ds max, then I STRONGLY recommand that you DO mention it for this model and EVERY other ones you would want to post about. Do remember that this is a GMAX forum section and not a 3d max section.
People seeing arts here done with 3d max when it is not even mentioned it was done with 3d max will be led into mistaking that GMAX can do that much quality and when they eventualy play around with GMAX and find out that this is not the case, they will start complaining. So to minimize this sort of problem, we encourage people to mention the tool they used to create theire art. But, if someone takes the habit of posting only 3d max screenshots, then we suggest that person go to the 3d max section and not GMAX.

Nope, my 3ds max trial expired almost a week ago. This WAS done in gmax rendered with yafray. To light it I used the Hemilight option in the YAGMAX part of rendersuite which seems to be similar to the skylight in 3ds max, both take forever to render. Here is a picture of the battlestar in gmax. Also, the 3ds max trial only lasts 30 days and my first post of this was April 6 and my last post was this week which is much more than thirty days. What I meant was I did not work on the battlestar for a while because I was playing with 3ds max.

Its been awhile since I updated this. Here is an orthographic view of the Galactica at its current stage of modeling. There are only a few more things I want to model before I attempt to texture it.

Hello Ads0529,
I know this is late, but I must say this. Your model is utterly outstanding and quite accurately detailed. If you can swing it, you may want to purchase 3Dmax and start selling the models, because look at all these comments! It would definitely be worth purchasing. |

Thank you. Currently I am in the process of saving money to buy 3ds Max which is a slow process. I did download the trial version which I made a few simple scenes in and starting in gmax really helped because I was able to jump right in without reading many tutorials and learning what many of the basic tools do and how they work. Until I get enough money I will stick with gmax.
